Throughout the movie, Eddie is facing a crucial high-stake pool match against legendary pool player known by the name of Minnesota Fats (played by Jackie Gleason).

Here are some fun trivial facts regarding the popular pool movie The Hustler:
  • The movie The Hustler is based on a novel of the same title by Walter Tevis.

  • Walter Tevis is also the author of The Hustler's sequel The Color of Money, which was also adapted to cinema by Martin Scorsese.

  • Paul Newman played the role of Fast Eddie in both film.

  • In both films, Newman was an Academy Awards nominee as The Best Actor in a Leading Role; he only won for The Color of Money.

  • Mosconi had to perform only one of the trick shots in the movie: the one in which Paul Newman causes the cue ball to drop two object balls into one pocket.

  • Willie Mosconi himself appears in the movie twice: the first time he is shown on a poster and the on the second time as a guy named Willie who is involved in the pool game.

  • Real life pool player Minnesota Fats claims that the movie character played by Jackie Gleason is named after him, while the rest of the world (including the author of the novel The Hustler) claims the exact opposite.
