Gambling and its Reasons: Why do People Gamble?
Gambling, on its various types and sanitized synonyms, has been a common recreation since forever, and not surprisingly, gambling is still a popular pastime in many cultures worldwide. Even people whose feet never stepped on the ground of a land-based casino and their hands never drew a wildcard nor a rolled a dice, may be taking part in the office pool, playing head and tail to choose the color of the tie or rubbing the top layer of a scratchcard.
Yes, even the most righteous people find themselves involve in some sort of gambling activity. However, the question brought up here does not begin with who but with why. Simply put: why do people gamble? Why do people gamble even though most of them (or us) know that the odds are against them? How come gambling continued to become such a popular recreation despite the law pursuit and the often unrestrained waste of hard-earned dough?
Money & More
Obviously, the desire to win - usually money but sometimes honor and respect - would be the most common answer if you'd run a poll among casino visitors, poker players and gamblers of other forms. The meaning of winning can diverse from one gambling fan to another; some will speak about the adrenaline rash felt right before the winning horse/sports team is announced, while others would swear that playing casino game makes them more relaxed than a yoga class. Some people may emphasize the social aspect of their Sunday poker or Wednesday bingo while others fantasize on hitting the jackpot and quitting their day job.
Summary
To summarize, gambling has as many reasons as it has forms and sub-types. A deepen research may look for a correlation between the type of gambling and the motive common to the people involved in it, something like: do people who play who play blackjack trust the gambler's fallacy less than people who spend their yearly holiday in front of Las Vegas progressive slot machines?
In the meantime, we can say that people gamble for variety of reasons: because they went through a once in a life time incident and they believe that it is their lucky day; cause betting on American Idol winner is far more interesting then analyzing the candidates on-stage performance and because winning any sum of money, right of nowhere, may prove that despite all the suffering and misery, the world is not against you.
